In my opinion, one of the quickest ways to get a sense of a man’s true character—without wasting years of time and effort—is to watch what comes out of his mouth and, even more importantly, how he responds when challenged.
I would put it into three broad categories:
Nafs al-Ammārah (النّفْسُالْأَمّارَةُ)
If you consistently see ego, the need to control, entitlement, greed, manipulation, contempt for others, discrimination, or an inability to accept being wrong—run. Don’t waste your time trying to reform someone who sees no need for self-reform.
Nafs al-Lawwāmah (النّفْسُاللّوّامَةُ)
Here you may see humility, moderation, the ability to listen, consideration for others, and—most importantly—the capacity to question and correct oneself. He may make mistakes, but he can recognize them and grow from them.
This is where it may be worth investing your time and effort. Watch whether his actions actually follow his words.
Nafs al-Muṭmaʾinnah (النّفْسُالْمُطْمَئِنّةُ)
If you encounter someone whose character reflects genuine inner peace—without arrogance, domination, greed, or the constant need to prove himself; someone grounded, just, compassionate, and at peace with truth—you are blessed.
Of course, no human being fits perfectly into a box. The real test is not whether someone ever displays weakness or ego, but what he does when he sees it in himself.
Basically: anything genuinely above the Nafs al-Ammārah is worth observing carefully. The difference is whether a person is ruled by his impulses, struggles honestly against them, or has reached a deeper state of inner peace.
