Few race cars carry the sheer audacity of the BMW M3 GTR E46. By the late 1990s BMW's beloved S54 inline six had hit a wall, and the Porsche 911 GT3 R was untouchable in the American Le Mans Series GT class. So BMW did something wild. Instead of squeezing another drop from an aging engine, they built an entirely new heart for the car: the P60B40, a 4.0 liter V8 screamer that changed everything. This wasn't just a bigger engine, it was a smarter one. Built from aluminum alloy, the P60B40 was somehow about 30 pounds lighter than the inline six it replaced. A flat plane crankshaft and dry sump system let it sit lower and further back in the chassis, sharpening the car's balance. The payoff was a banshee wail instead of a typical V8 growl, redlining past 8,300 RPM and producing up to 450 horsepower even with restrictors choking its breath. Paired with a Hewland straight cut gear dogbox, the transmission added its own piercing whine, turning every lap into pure sensory theater. BMW found a loophole nobody had thought to close. Homologation rules demanded the car be sold to the public, but never said how many had to be built. So BMW raced first and sold later, dominating 2001 by winning six of eight races. Porsche protested furiously, insisting no road going V8 M3 existed. BMW's answer was almost comedic: ten Strassenversion road cars priced at 250,000 Euros each, ensuring nobody could realistically buy one. It worked, barely, and it bought BMW one glorious season of chaos. The rulemakers struck back for 2002, demanding 100 road cars and 1,000 engines, numbers BMW simply couldn't justify building. So the GTR came home to Europe, where AC Schnitzer gave it a second life at the Nürburgring Nordschleife.
