@super.level.z: One easy trick… your console will definitely appreciate. 😄 If your console keeps asking for the date and time every time you turn it on, there’s a good chance the CMOS battery has finally given up. Let’s replace the old battery and make a simple upgrade by installing a removable battery holder. That means the next time the battery dies, you can swap it out in seconds, no soldering required. It’s a small mod that can save a lot of hassle and keep your console from constantly forgetting the time. #retrogaming #gamingcommunity #beforeandafter #repair #soldering

Just to reiterate what the other person said. Do not use a CR2032 in a Dreamcast without a mod or better yet, use a ML2032. Using a CR2032 like that can cause it to explode or leak, damaging the console

For Dreamcast specifically since I’m getting questions across platforms - ml2032 (rechargeable) is what you want, which can be found via my Amazon store linked in my bio. I realize you can see it says CR2032 in the video, thats just what I had at the time to explain the general idea across all consoles. Didn't think anyone would care that much.

The Dreamcast uses a ML2430 (VA0) and ML2032 (VA1/VA2) for the clock battery. This is because the console is designed to trickle charge the clock battery while it’s powered on. A full recharge takes 2 hrs if you only power on the Dreamcast around once a month or so. Of course within many years of steady DC gameplay, the ML2032/ML2430 won’t hold as much of a charge and eventually will require replacement. It must be replaced with a ML2032/ML2430 battery. If you are replacing it with a CR2032, then you need to first install a Schottky diode off the nearby resistor. Failing to do this, the trickle charge will overheat the CR2032 and cause it to leak. And tbh, modding the resistor to use a CR2032 isn’t worth the upgrade. Sure the CR2032 is cheaper and more accessible than ML2032/ML2430, but the battery will go bad around 6 weeks and that will add up over time. In the long run, it’s better to replace like-for-like and stick with the ML series battery (ML2032 or ML2430).
