I remember being handed this and just reading over it and saying that I didn’t believe any of these things about myself and she’s like well deep down you have to or you wouldn’t be the way that you do and I really stared at it and genuinely didn’t think I felt any of those ways about myself

I had this sheet and I remember my therapist being like ‘how does it sit with you if I said you might feel you are worthless’ and I didn’t know how to explain to her my issue is moreso like, I truly believe no one is worthless including myself and I don’t believe I’m worthless but I believe for some reason people never see the worth I have or value that I see in myself? Like maybe it’s the same thing but it feels different

Soo interesting! I just started emdr a few weeks ago and came up with the most precise but eloquent negative core belief that I could and then as I’m going through it have learned that I way over complicated it and, unfortunately, it really is as simple as believing that “I don’t matter”. 😂

I know that worksheet 😫😫 I use it as a jump off point for individuals who may be stuck on how to frame or elaborate their own negative core beliefs.

yesss “i am alone” or “i am fundamentally flawed” weren’t that simple for me. i wasn’t alone, i always have had friends and people generally like me but i don’t feel understood by them which makes me feel disconnected. and constantly being misunderstood does make me feel different, but not necessarily flawed or broken.

My therapist framed it as “this is a list to get you thinking but your personal phrase may not be on here” and that helped me not get stuck. I remember a few times reading the list and saying “it’s close to this but isn’t this”. But handing a list like that on day one without doing exploration first.

Also an empathic person will believe all of them in varying degrees. Add a layer of intellectualization and we get lost in the weeds. Too many weeds, too challenging to locate the lions.

yes! I felt the same way when I got a list for EMDR. it felt like being put in a little box.

I found figuring out core beliefs quite helpful. The pre formulated ones that kind of fit made me feel less alone and less weird and I also worked out some more specific ones with a therapist. One thing I noticed is they still feel weird (especially said out loud) and I think it’s due to embarrassment. The dissonance between what I think and what I feel shows itself that way and that just is uncomfortable.

Yes, this is so important because it’s reductionistic and it doesn’t appreciate the human connection and uniqueness of that client

I think it’s a good starting point for those who haven’t figured out what’s going on in their emotional world (this was me once) it helps to have a starting point. Once you’re able to describe it in more nuanced ways, I see how it can be limiting if you’re not allowed to go beyond those descriptions.

I’ve had a similar experience. I’ve been to several therapists, individual, couple and even family therapy. You are the first creator that makes any sense to me at all.

Omg thank you!! I keep going back to these short sentences because they were pushed as CORE beliefs and they just don't seem like enough. Like I'm trying to make them fit in situations that just don't work

My problem is that my lifetime core belief is I am alone/Everyone leaves eventually and in my case my husband died so I don’t think I’m ever going to work through that all the way lol (I’m in EMDR, I’m ok)
