@kporter.stuff: Butyl tape seals through compression, no cure time, no mixing, just pressure between two clean dry surfaces producing a conforming moisture-resistant seal. The uniquely low gas permeability makes it the standard for long-term moisture exclusion in glazing, roofing, automotive, and waterproof enclosures. It stays flexible indefinitely, which is what makes it work in joints that move. The performance killer: insufficient compression leaves air pockets that become leak paths. Minimum 50 percent compression of original tape thickness. Clean dry surfaces every time. Know the trade-offs before you specify it. 🙌🏼⚙️

Lauren B :
butyl tape is really good at sticking to itself, which makes butyl tape the best butyl tape removal tool!

Good information, one correction butyl tape does straight up after decades. If you ever work on a oh car trying to replace the window regulator, you will see the moisture barrier sheet is falling off the body panel due to dried up tape

We use these to leak test welds on spacecraft. Make a little bag outlined with this stuff around the weld and a leak detector

Is my algorithm drunk? How did I get here and why is this so interesting although I am 99.99% sure I’ll never have any use for this knowledge.

So it adheres 𝑎𝑛𝑑 seals from just some applied pressure? That's wild. I don't know what to do with this information, but it's something that will become relevant at a very random point in the future.

we use a bigger version of this product in between the two half's of manholes. installed a 10 ft w by 12 ft L by 8 ft tall manhole. 2 weeks later it needed to be removed and moved. when we went to lift the top half of the manhole, the butyl tape was strong enough to lift the bottom half of a chamber. it was seriously impressive

chewing gum is basically butyl too so you can also use it as a sealant in a pinch.
