@jessesage_: Replying to @cuddy buddy Rita /Margarita is gorgeous in all forms 💃#ritahayworth #oldhollywood #oldhollywoodmovies #historytok #oldhollywoodglam
I respectfully disagree. Rita Hayworth wasn’t “whitewashed”—she was marketed. She cultivated a glamorous screen persona, exactly as studios expected every star to do. That’s what Hollywood did. If every stage name, hairstyle, or image makeover counts as “whitewashing,” then the term has become so broad that it’s practically meaningless.
Everyone got a Hollywood makeover, regardless of ethnicity. Just look at what they did to Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich—their transformations were dramatic. Despite being more “white” than anyone in Hollywood, they were still completely “Hollywood-washed.” That’s what the studio system was built to do: manufacture celebrities, and stars.
And if the goal had really been to “whitewash” Rita Hayworth, why change her first name from Margarita to Rita instead of giving her a completely Anglo-American name? The change was about creating a more marketable screen identity, not erasing her heritage.
