Melbourne Institutions: Part One - Florentino. Florentino is a longstanding Italian restaurant located on Bourke Street in Melbourne CBD. 🇮🇹 The story actually began in 1893 when Cafe Denat first opened on Collins Street. It later moved to Bourke Street before restaurateur Rinaldo Massoni took over the venue in 1928, transforming it into Cafe Florentino. Since then, the venue has changed ownership many times across almost 100 years. Most recently it spent over 25 years under the Grossi family before entering a new era with Edition Hospitality, the group behind Reine and La Rue and Nomad. Under one roof sits three distinct venues: the Florentino Dining Room, home to the iconic Mural Room covered in huge Renaissance style murals painted in the 1920’s, Cellar Bar and Cafe Florentino. Cafe Florentino was formerly known as The Grill, but has now returned to its original 1928 name - where we dined on this occasion. The menu takes inspiration from Tuscan trattorias with wood fire cooking and house made pastas. You can either order a la carte or opt for their Menu del Giorno, with two courses for $55 or three for $65. We recieved their complimentary housemade spelt sourdough, which uses a starter nurtured in the restaurant over 20 years! 🍞

⭐️ Suppli, Cacio e Pepe - super creamy
✔️ Wagyu Bresaola, Beetroot, Gnocchi Fritti, Fennel ✔️ Spanner Crab Tagliolini, Chilli, Lemon, Fennel, Bottarga
✔️ Ravioli Doppio, Erbette & Pistachio, Fontina - entree size so you only get two, which isn’t enough, however it isn’t something you’ll see elsewhere! ✔️ Pork Cotoletta, Cucumber, Pickled Green Tomato - cooked perfectly, on the small side
➖ Flathead, Butterflied - not a lot of flavour but a cooked well
✔️ Hanger Steak - perfectly cooked, tender, good crust ⭐️ Signature Tiramisu - perfect
✔️ Gelato alla Nocciola, Toasted Hazelnuts, Hazelnut Oil, Sea Salt Service feels formal but still relaxed. It leans towards a very corporate, mature crowd. Lovely overall, though on the pricier side.
