@eatthecountry: Crab apples don’t take well to being eaten straight from the tree. Just bite into one and you’ll probably regret it, as I have just demonstrated. Cook them properly, though, and they have one of the finest apple flavours you’ll ever taste. They’re wonderful things. They’re just starting to appear now, and you’ll see plenty through August and September. In some years they even stay on the trees into the new year, depending on how many the wildlife gets to first. They’re packed with pectin too, which makes them brilliant for jams, jellies and preserves. It’s not a very flattering name for such a lovely fruit. They’re just apples really.
