This is a small portion of a documentary made by Luce, that shows Tigrayan dignitaries submitting themselves to Italian colonial rule and accepting “protection”.

The narrative presented in this short film misrepresents the historical reality of Tigray and undermines the sacrifices its patriots made for the Ethiopian nation. During the 1936 Italian invasion, the region was mobilized under traditional Tigrayan military leaders, including Graazmachs and Fitawraris, many of whom died defending the country. Historical evidence highlights that the Tigrayan forces bore the brunt of Italy’s advanced chemical warfare at the Battle of Maychew. Mirroring the collective mobilization of the Battle of Adwa, Tigrayan leadership anticipated strategic reinforcement from the central government and neighboring provinces. When this support failed to materialize, local forces were left isolated against a technologically superior enemy, resulting in catastrophic losses and widespread poisoning. This perceived abandonment fostered a lasting sense of betrayal among Tigrayan patriots. Consequently, after the occupation ended, this deep-seated resentment against the imperial crown served as the primary catalyst for regional rebellion, marking the tragedy at Maychew as the birthplace of the concept of Woyane(rebellion/resistance) & lately this resistance movement was established at Dedebit desert by their descendants.
