@wordswithbones: Replying to @reasontostay let’s look at what, to me, is one of the most maddening linguistic conventions in the Korean language when transliterating foreign words. #koreanculture #koreanlanguage #linguistics #foreignlanguage #LanguageLearning

On a similar note, I hate how 떡볶이 is romanised as 'topokki' and people think that's what it's called 😭

You mentioned linguistics, but remember, linguists do this without the bias. Once you said one way is “better” (and closer to the original ≠ better), you kind of threw the linguistics part out the window. It’s a very interesting video nonetheless to see how it works in the two countries.

I'm Korean and 찌스 would be pronounced like jji-seu (the 'seu' sound being similar to the s sound in 'house'), which sounds nothing like cheese

찌스 (jjiseu) ignores both the “ch” and /z/ sounds. 치즈 preserves the “ch” and better approximates the /z/, which is why it’s the standard.

The one that hung me up one of my first days in Korea was Fanta. I was trying to order a drink at a restaurant. I tried 판타, I tried just saying ‘Fanta,’ eventually I just gave up and said 오렌지 콜라 or something like that. Only later would I learn it’s called 환타. 환타???? Where are you getting the hw from??

So basically, you don't like [z] as ㅈ in (South) Korean. In the word 치즈, the ㅈ is realized as [dʑ] because it is between two vowels. I think ㅈ is the closest sound Korean could get to a [z] because they are both voiced and sibilants. It could be argued as a case of fortition, too, when a sound becomes stronger. 치스 is pronounced chi-sseu, and I think the ㅅ is not that accurate for the South Korean ear because the voiced quality of [z] is very salient for them and ㅈ more accurately could represent that.

i wonder if this is why the group SECRET has a song called Magic where it’s pronounced Mazik instead of Magic (even though they pronounce Magic correctly in the beginning of the song)

A lot of the words are also from Japanese pronunciations. I wonder if cheese was from that.

치즈 sounds more like ‘cheese’ than 찌스. ㅊ is closer to ‘ch’ than ㅉ, and yes, ‘cheese’ has an ‘s’ in it, but we pronounce it like ‘z’ in english. (It’s pronounced like ‘cheeze’, not ‘cheese’). So the ㅈ serves that purpose better than ㅅ.
