@dynastianofficial: During the Battle of Okinawa in April 1945, one of the largest and bloodiest battles of the Pacific War, a wounded Japanese soldier is reported to have emerged from a cave to surrender. U.S. Marines paused their advance while U.S. Navy corpsmen treated his injuries before he was taken into custody. Although surrenders by Japanese soldiers did occur, they were relatively uncommon during the campaign, which was characterized by intense combat, high casualties, and difficult fighting across the island. Under the laws of war, military medical personnel were expected to provide care to wounded individuals regardless of nationality. Incidents such as this illustrate that, even amid one of the war's most brutal battles, medical treatment could be extended to enemy combatants.
