This is really hard to write and y’all please bear with me. My heart is breaking, again. Melody arrived at MSU this morning and she’s had an extensive orthopedic exam including X-rays of multiple joints/limbs. I just had a really long and difficult conversation with Dr. Fontenot. Due to the severity of the primary angular joint which is the left knee, coupled with her left fetlock which basically twist in the opposite direction they would need to try to straighten her knee, as well as some deformities on the back right fetlock and pasturn, we have decided not to move forward with surgery. We could, but she and I both feel we should not. It’s a very poor outcome/prognosis and by doing surgery, we could just create a cascade of other instabilities. I have lived this before, and while I don’t regret one single second I had with Micki, I would not do it again, without a really optimistic hopeful outcome. She did state that most owners, she would suggest euthanasia, but she knew her value and life was not dependent on being rideable and it would not be inhumane to bring her home and love her while she’s not in pain and able to get around without difficulty. I started to cry and just felt she’s never really been loved as she should have been and I’d like her to have some more time for that. It’s just really hard to make the decision to euthanize a baby who is doing well at this time. So that’s what we are going to do. Just love her for a bit, there’s no fault in that surely 🥹. Her trip to and from MSU and her diagnostics today total around 1200. If you would like a refund of your donation please let us know.
