Burkina Faso shut down a Bill Gates-funded mosquito experiment. The West called it a setback for science. Burkina Faso called it sovereignty. The Target Malaria project ran in Burkina Faso for over a decade. It was funded by the Gates Foundation. Burkina Faso shut down a Bill Gates-funded mosquito experiment. The West called it a setback for science. Burkina Faso called it sovereignty. The Target Malaria project ran in Burkina Faso for over a decade. It was funded by the Gates Foundation. In August 2025, researchers released 16,000 genetically modified mosquitoes in a village called Souroukoudingan. Eleven days later, the government ended the entire program. The raid that preceded the shutdown tells you what was really happening. Judicial police entered the IRSS research institute and searched scientists—including their vehicles—on the suspicion they might be carrying mosquitoes in their pockets. Offices and labs were sealed and marked as crime scenes. Why? Because the project was being conducted with foreign funding and foreign priorities, in a country that has decided foreign-funded science does not get a free pass. The government's communiqué said it was acting in "national interests." That should be enough. The Gates Foundation has poured billions into Africa. It has funded malaria research, vaccine programs, and agricultural projects. It has also been criticized for experimenting on African populations without full transparency, for prioritizing its own research agendas, and for treating the continent as a laboratory. Burkina Faso under Captain Ibrahim Traoré has made its position clear. Foreign research must answer to Ouagadougou, not Seattle. Health policy must serve Burkinabè people, not the strategic interests of a foundation. The government said it would pursue "endogenous solutions" to malaria—solutions rooted in local knowledge and controlled by local institutions. The West will tell you this is anti-science. It is not. It is pro-sovereignty. A country has the right to decide what experiments happen on its soil, who funds them, and who controls the data. Burkina Faso exercised that right. That is not a setback. That is independence. Do you trust a Bill Gates funded health project in Africa? #AfricanHistory #Africa #HistoryTok #DidYouKnow #FYP
