The video shows arctic foxes performing “mousing,” a precise hunting technique where they leap up to 2 meters high and dive headfirst into snow to capture rodents like lemmings, using acute hearing to locate prey up to 60 cm underground, as detailed in studies from the Arctic Fox Center. This behavior, often mistaken for play, is crucial for survival in subzero Arctic conditions, where foxes’ fur provides insulation against -50°C temperatures and their elongated snouts prevent injury during dives, per a 2024 peer-reviewed study in Integrative and Comparative Biology.
