Ocean Gaia is a monumental 45-ton, 5.5-meter-wide underwater sculpture created by environmental artist Jason deCaires Taylor. Submerged 5 meters beneath the surface off the coast of Tokunoshima, Japan, it is the first large-scale underwater sculpture ever installed in the country. Shaped to function as both a visual tribute and a living artificial reef, it highlights the deep, interconnected bond between humanity and the ocean. The structure is perforated with open cavities around its edges to encourage coral, algae, and fish to inhabit the sculpture, slowly transforming it into a living ecosystem. The swirling base contours are inspired by the intricate sand circles made by the native white-spotted pufferfish. The overall sculpture rests cradled on the seafloor, echoing the local mountain silhouette said to resemble a sleeping pregnant woman. Drawing on the myth of Gaia (the primordial Earth mother), the sculpture represents the ocean as the maternal source of all life. It was commissioned by the Tokunoshima Fisheries Cooperative to help revitalize the island's coastal heritage, promote sustainable tourism, and reconnect younger generations with the sea. #fyp #lore #foryoupage #targetaudience #xyzbca
