@h.marcus06: The Armistice of 11 November 1918 ────────── The Armistice of 11 November 1918 was an agreement that ended fighting on land, at sea, and in the air between the Allied Powers and Germany, the last Central Power still engaged in World War I. It was signed in a railway carriage in the Compiègne Forest, near the town of Compiègne, after Bulgaria, the Ottoman Empire, and Austria-Hungary had already agreed to separate armistices. Signed under the leadership of Ferdinand Foch at 5:00 a.m., the armistice came into effect at 11:00 a.m. on 11 November 1918. It marked the Allied victory and Germany's defeat, although it was not a formal surrender. The agreement required Germany to cease hostilities, withdraw its forces west of the Rhine, surrender military equipment, release Allied prisoners of war, and accept the continuation of the Allied naval blockade. The armistice was renewed three times while peace negotiations continued, eventually leading to the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on 28 June 1919, which came into force on 10 January 1920. Although the armistice had been signed earlier that morning, fighting continued until 11:00 a.m., resulting in approximately 2,738 casualties on the final day of the war. #historyedit #History #ww1 #1914 #movie #History #armistice1918 #worldwar1
