@ashbg.motherhood: We have been told for years that the gender pay gap exists because women take time off to have children but the reality is that female graduates earn less than male graduates. It is one of the most convenient explanations in existence. It makes the gap sound like a choice, or perhaps a natural consequence of a personal decision rather than evidence of a system that undervalues women from the moment they enter it. But it turns out female graduate salaries are already just 90.9% of male graduate salaries. Not after career breaks. Not after children. Not after years of part time work and flexibility arrangements and all the other things we are told cause the gap. Right at the start, fresh out of university, same qualification, same field, same… everything. Women often start their careers earning less, a gap of 6%, which grows over time to 18% as careers progress. She has not taken a career break yet. She has not had children yet. She has not asked for flexibility or reduced her hours or made any of the choices we are told are responsible for the gap. She is just a woman and that is already costing her. Gender equality specialist Leonora Risse wrote about this in their latest article for The Conversation: “Female graduates are earning less than their male peers. What might be causing the gap?”

If this were true then why wouldnt business owners hire women exclusively? If all things are equal, wouldnt they want the employee they can pay less? The truth is much more nuanced. Women choose different careers, and men tend to work more hours overall, even equating for leaves of absence because of children. Oh, and men dominate in dirty anf dangerous fields of work, which typically pay more, because ya know, theyre dangerous jobs.

Actually there’s a show on Netflix called “explained” that goes over the gender pay gap (and many other interesting topics), it really blew my mind and I recommend it to everyone!

Is this the same qualifications for the same job at the same company? Because different places in different cities pay at different rates. Taking into account any previous study or work history? Or just pulling random figures?

This is one source I found doing a debate on it for a class. Loved it- my professor put it up on the board and had a long talk about it and how amazed he was. It’s a bit older, 2021, but a good read. https://iwpr.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/2021-Occupational-Wage-Gap-Brief-v2.pdf

source? because every study on the "wage gap" has been shown to not be accurate when dealing with same position, experience amd education. the "earnings gap" can be explained by different choices men and women make, women on average tend to prioritize living a balanced complete life, taking time off and valuing their physical and mental well being where men tend to work more overtime, take less time off and have work as their #1 priority and these difference in choices end up having men earn more despite practically equal pay.

Yes you choose different jobs. But the gap grows for those that have kids. Women without kids have a much smaller gap splits clearly a factor. Blame husbands but not employers.
