I’m 6 years deep into therapy and have also had EMDR. I’m incapable of sustaining romantic relationships past a couple of years because while I crave deep love and do feel it, I’m also constantly hyper vigilant and exhaust my partners. I create the abandonment I fear most by choosing partners who are emotionally unavailable. Trying to earn love while managing the emotions of someone else is so woven into the fabric of who I am that I’ve found it impossible to unravel. I do have a best friend of 21 years who has taught me what being loved looks like. Loving my daughter has taught me how to show love and how to show up. I can do those things. But I can’t FEEL loved or safe. Not ever. It’s heartbreaking.
