@bardboytroy: Hunchback of Notre Dame analysis—Why Quasimodo doesn’t end up with Esmeralda, aka Who is the Monster and Who is the Man (remake of @Troy Zaher) #disney #hunchbackofnotredame #media #analysis #hond
I always thought of it as Quasi idolizes her, Frolo villainized her but the captain only saw her as a human being and lived her for who she was.

quasi was seeking validation through esmerelda, and getting her in the end would confirm he needs someone else to make him worthy. he needed community and more importantly, self-love.

as a kid i was so upset that he didn’t “get the girl” at the end because i was so used to that being a reward for the protagonist, now I’m glad they chose not to go that route I think it makes for a far more mature and human ending, and is very respectful of Esmeralda’s character and her autonomy

it sucks that this type of Disney movie writing is gone.

Quasimodo also being happy that she’s happy, even if it’s not with him, is what ultimately makes him more of a “man” than Frollo. Frollo thinks that if he can’t possess her, no one can. Quasimodo being able to put aside his own feelings and respect Esmeralda’s autonomy is what makes him better than Frollo could ever be.

The juxtaposition of the songs heaven’s light/hellfire is the greatest Disney sequence ever created… Back-to-back songs, reflecting on light and darkness

I think it's also a good study in want vs. need. Quasi WANTS to be with Esmeralda, but what he NEEDS is to be loved for who he is. "Heaven's Light" is focused not specifically on Esmeralda, but on how her kindness and affection makes him feel. He wants to have a romantic love, but what he needs is a platonic love from his friends and community

tbh if Esmeralda was to end up qith Quasi, that would mean she is treated as some sort of prize rather than a person. as a person, she can make her own choices and she chose Febb. if she were a prize, she would jump onto Quasi the second the last song starts

I love Phoebus' relationship with Esmeralda. I love that, unlike the other two, he's intrigued by her, not entranced. His first instict after they first meet, (and fight) is discovering what lies beneath her rebel persona.

He doesn’t get what he wants, but he gets what he needs, which is friendship. On top of that he is seen as a human by the crowds, and it’s not just him forcing it either, but he’s embraced by that little girl who is able to look past his exterior and see the good man underneath. She opens the eyes of everyone else.

Some people in the comments having no idea how adaptations work is killing me 😅. I said “Disney’s hunchback of Notre dame” because I’m talking about the Disney adaptation; not the original story which has *many* differences including themes and messaging, nor any other adaptation.

If he had ended up with Esmeralda, it would’ve confirmed that he was a “monster” that needed saving, when all he really needed was people that helped him realize his true worth. Part of the reason he is okay with Phoebus and Esmeralda in the end is because he has realized that he doesn’t need anyone else to feel worthy anymore. Or he is at least on the path to feeling that way.

I love this movie it is one of my favorites. I have always said Frolo and Gaston are some of the best Disney villains. Not because they are evil, but because they are just people; people you can find in real life out on the street.
