$5,000 in 1974 is worth $18,744.90 in 2003 (the year this is taking place). They are being completely fair with buying his house for fair market value plus 18k.

lol people will see this and defend the company because "a contract means something and it's the law". But that same company will find a way to break a contract if they will lose money from it.

I’m so confused, it’s in the contract clear as day he can be bought out plus 18k not just 18k. It’s a contract he signed as an adult.

fair market value + $5,000 for a total of $18,000? Or FMV + $18,000?

I mean, that’s $18,000 plus the fair market value of the house. Judging by the size of the house I’d estimate it’s a 3 bedroom. The average 3 bedroom house in southern New Mexico in 2003 was about $160,000. So he would’ve gotten $178,000. He lives alone and could easily downsize to a 1 bedroom house for $80,000, giving him almost $100,000 left to use however he wanted. The deal may seem predatory and in some ways it is, but he would’ve been fairly compensated. Now what they were going to use the land for is an altogether different story, but as far as he is concerned that’s not really his problem.

For people who dont know they are not buying his house for market price and adding 18k on the price the are only buying the land which mean he will lose the money he spent building the house

so they said buy out at fair market value but typically what that means is the company is going to decide what they think is fair market value not what actually is fair market value and I don't know because I didn't watch the show but what would be the point in them buying out that property and giving him $18,000 like what are they doing with the land

Fair market value plus the 18? He would have a lot of money unless he still has a mortgage from 74
