I took out a 401k loan at my $30k a year job so I could afford to leave there & get a certification that got me a job making over $100k a year. It was worth the penalty.

I don’t think most people care about the withdraw penalty either. I can’t blame them, we’re on a floating rock & almost everyone is struggling.

It’s actually insane that people can be penalized for borrowing their own money. This country is so backwards

be mindful that your check will be short whatever the payment is. a lot of people dont realize how much $100-$300 out a check can do.

I did this twice and picked one year repayment, paid off my CC debts and I didn't even feel it coming out of my paycheck..

To recover fully from a 401k loan you have to pay the loan off then add the loses on potential earnings you suffered for the duration of the payback.

In case of a real emergency or where it makes the most financial sense (like a debt payoff that you won’t run back up), sure. To go on a trip, crazy work.

Who cares just pay the taxes on the money then. 30 percent of whatever you take out. Plus still get the money left in your 401k

And the worst part? Can't pay extra. You gotta pay the whole thing off or stick with the payment plan. Still pro-401K loan

keep in mind when you apply for this loan you are immediately given a contract to agree too that states all this information clearly

Just make sure you read the summary plan description for your 401k to verify all the rules of the plan for taking loans and withdrawals, every company’s plan is different

Finally someone speaking some sense. It's called a RETIREMENT account. Check on it..at to it, but unless you have an emergency (and no emergency fund) you should set it & basically (kinda) forget it. Please think ahead. Your 55+ self will thank you.
