Middle manager here - have no say in the matter. Overarching company policy trumps my preference of not caring where the work is being done at. I have employee in office and remote, I’m remote but manager is in office. Agreed it’s a bit of a mess

depends on the function. if its finance then yes you should be working in office at the jr to manager level. the best learning environment is a bullpen. period. if youre director level and above, remote is fine

WFH manager here with direct reports headed into the office 50% of the time. You should never boast about it, but I’m also transparent that if it were up to me they would only have to go in when necessary - which is how I operate. Company policy trumps my personal managerial perspective.

I was a remote manager for a large nonprofit, managing a team of six recruiters across the state. I was hired as fully remote and honestly assumed everyone else was too. Then I found out my team was being required to come into the office at least three days a week. As soon as I learned that, I asked leadership to provide me with office space so I could come in the same amount we were asking of my team. They told me remote work was a privilege and that if I wanted to give it up, they’d rent me a small coworking space. A few months later, after paying for a coworking office they clearly didn’t want to keep paying for, they decided to let my entire team go fully remote instead.

The excuse is: “it’s different, I’m the manager”. In other words, they just use it as a reward for individuals in high management positions.

My advice to my team - i don’t care what you do or where you work from as long as the work is done efficiently and accurately. I do caveat that going into office is much better for career advancement as long as top leaders are there too. Hallway passings and facetime go a long way + you can learn some efficiencies/problem solve more efficiently if you’re sitting next to people working on similar things

My boss is in office 4 days a week her preference but everyone else remote. We email reports and also upload them with backup to share point no issues at all. My corp office is 13 hours away.

I was in a hybrid situation and joined my team in the office 3 days/wk. if someone needed a day at home out of sync I didn’t make them “make up” a day in office. I got so much more done seeing people instead of relying on email, slack, and zoom meetings. But I also got so much done at home where I could focus.

I'm Director level, have managers anaylst etc report up through me, all remote but i do have a staff meeting on Mondays and encourage people to come in but its not required. I used to not be a fan of remote BUT love love it now.

It's actually completely reversed at my organization! Managers are expected in office three days a week, but we are 100% remote, with no expectations of traveling to the corporate office unless advanced notice is given for specific events.

I was a VP at IBM and left due to RTO. I had hundreds of employees all over the world. For many years. But for some reason, we could suddenly not do our jobs remotely any more. Anyway, I left a bunch of money because I didn’t agree with it.

Try the opposite - all salaried employees at my company have been recently issued RTO and all hourly employees remain remote😂. Tell us you are trying to thin the herd with being so obvious. But “collaboration”…. Cant stand corporate anymore
