The word "God" is mentioned exactly 142 times within the first 164 pages of the Alcoholics Anonymous Big Book, though the text frequently expands beyond this specific name by referencing a "Creator," "Maker," and "Father" over 400 times. Pretty much religious!

God is just what some people use cause it’s easier than explaining our personal higher power. It took me awhile to settle and understand it’s not religious. Keep going u will find ur people and ur community I did after a few try’s and so grateful I kept going and changed my mindset to be more accepting of people while also staying true to myself

I’m glad that this meeting went better. Im curious, do you live in a part of the country that is generally religious (especially if it’s one denomination and that’s what everyone is) or is it more multicultural?

I feel the same way about AA and from what I’ve heard it’s finding the right group that is your right fit.. but this has happened to a friend of mine in her home group and she ended up being bullied by another AA’r

Feel the same about the GOD talk, though I was forced to go bc I attempted. Not to say I haven’t coped with alcohol in the past.

Everyone has an opinion. Follow the principles of recovery not personalities and all will be well.

Yay! I love women’s meetings! there is a chapter in the big book called “we agnostics” that might be helpful for you.

Ok - in the steps, it’s “god as you understand him/them/it”. Every meeting has its own personality. I’m an Al-Anon participant and I had to go for months before I felt good there.

It’s not religious, it doesn’t follow any religion. It’s god of your own understanding, so until you work out what that might be, you can work around the “religious”

I completely agree, AA is absolutely religious and I am neither religious nor spiritual in any way, they promote that all religions and beliefs are accepted but it is 100% not the case. I originally tried AA for myself about 7 years ago and wasn't in a very strong place but was bombarded with god talk and printouts on tables saying god is your saviour when they clearly promote that this is not a basis for the group. A year ago I went again with a family member who wanted to try it and asked for my support in her attendance, I have been sober for 7 years now by setting my own rules but went anyway to also see if I was wrong originally. I'm extremely independent and strong now so decided to address the group with my story, telling them that I wasn't religious or spiritual and AA wasn't for me but am happy it works for others and hoped it would help my family member. I was met with sneers from other members of the group and others just looked down at the floor as if to not acknowledge me speaking. On the 15 minute break I was approached by a few veteran members and told that maybe I didn't belong there and shouldn't share my views or maybe it would be better if I left, I was told that god was a big part of recovery for a lot of people there and shouldn't say that god was not part of my sobriety. I don't think about or crave alcohol anymore and regularly go on nights out with friends who do like a drink, I just don't want to drink and it's not even a temptation to me. I now live a happy life, free from my chains and run my own successful business which wasn't even an option 7 years ago, I could barely answer the front door. These people didn't want me to share this as it didn't conform to what they believe, they seemed to think I should always live in fear which I don't and never will, I mean, what sort of life is that? A dependant one. I've been dependant once and never will be again.
