Hi, Storyteller from Twitter here! To give context, the writing of “special interests” was me describing how Dan wrote Yuri. He did actually speak further about this though because many people have asked if he wrote Yuri specifically to be autistic, to which he said it was complicated. He didn’t specifically write her that way, but rather similar to how he was when he was younger realizing that others might not have his same interests. Lastly he said that with identity itself, if Yuri was to be diagnosed with autism she likely would think about what that means for a while, and suggested that rather than identifying with characters because of a characteristic they have, we can identify with the way they express themselves instead.

No not everyone has special interests but the word “special” could’ve been used as an adjective here. I like this headcanon and I’m not against it at all I just think many people are using the wrong explanation

Hey, I’m not saying this wouldn’t be awesome if it was true, but the saying “special interest” can be used very broadly depending on the person and their experiences/day to day lingo. Someone can use special interest to pertain to an interest they are particularly invested in without previously having knowledge of its roots in psychology and ASD. Also, this would technically only be an implication, not directly canon. If you can only speculate that he means special interest in one way or another, and it wasn’t said outright, it’s just implied.
