@jamievia_wellness: Hydration is KEY for helping you not feel like shit. I drink a lot of water always, and I also always ask for the full bag of saline, rather than just the standard 5 minute rinse. I start the drip while I’m sitting there waiting on my labs to come back before they can start the chemo, then I finish it after the chemo bag. It only ads about 10 mins or so to my infusion time to do it this way! Highly recommend if it’s appropriate for you and your medical team approves. Do you get extra fluids too? #tnbc #cancerwarrior #chemo #breastcancersupport #triplenegativebc

Why do you have to ask for this? Shouldn't they do it automatically?

Chemo nurse here! I agree 100%. Hydration is the most important thing when getting treatment. The best way to get this is to talk to your doctor prior to treatment starting. Nurses can’t give hydration without an order and sometimes it’s hard to get an order once you start treatment if the doctor is busy.

Once your port is accessed you have to keep the line running, that is what it is there for. Then chemo then a line flush and heparin

Yup, ask for some extra fluids, you probably need it, and it doesn’t take any extra work for us, we are going to access it either which way. Some folks have fluid limitations due to other health issues that’s why it’s not always given as a default. But never hurts to ask.

I asked for a full size bag while doing chemo and then my cancer center does an automatic hydration infusion a week later. its amazing how a simple bag of fluids made me feel so much better.

tbf you don’t know what ur potassium, sodium, urea etc are. where i work they would wait for a U+E to come back first before starting fluids

I didn't have to ask for fluids. I can't believe you didn't get the full bag as a standard. But I did require that my port got accessed after labs came back because I wouldn't wait more than 2 hrs for treatment.

Absolutely true. My husband gets one b4 the infusion and then we drive to another Kaiser and get the the saline IV. Helps him a lot. Now we go every Friday for one to keep him hydrated.
