You guys are doing great. One thing that helped me when I was learning a new language was to ask “what’s that?” Or “what do you mean? What is that word?” People will be happy to help you out in most cases.

Honestly no one should be apologizing because both parties are learning. The person learning English, either actively or passive, neither you. Both are learning but if communication is made successfully it's what matters
Here in France, I do a lot of mistakes while speaking French, some even basic 😅, but I can communicate well with French people and when I do mistakes I try to learn from them because some are easily corrected

A travelers phrase book can be very useful for everyday language you need. You can learn the phrases for your interactions

yeah sometimes it's just backwards like here in Stockholm where I worked, turists from Spain used to only speak Spanish to me and get upset that I didn't understand, we know English and Swedish here not Spanish.. (allthough I love Spanish) And last time I was in Old town I coundn't order in Swedish, had to talk English. 🥲😁 like what. yeah sometimes it's just weird like that 🙃🥰

Go to a cashier. The BEST experience here is to wait in line, engage in conversation (most speak english) them when you go to pay everyone helps you and by the time you are over your know everything about their lives and vice versa and you got to learn a word or two in Portuguese. 🥰
