My dude this trope was one of the main plot lines of lord of the rings, you know the ring that urged people into doing bad things?

Literally in the second book of my trilogy the FMC fights her past life persona and in book three the MMC faves the personification of his inner “demons” as his “twin.”

I’ve noticed this across fantasy in general. Seems to be a common theme

Ironically shadow and bone does this well. Specifically in the books alina is always questioning why she wants power: is it to save her country? Or does she simply want the power to have it?

I got to ask this question. what genre do you mean is now primarily donated by women that was dominated by men? and do you mean the consumer or the author? because fantasy and high fantasy and sci-fi for sure is still dominated by men in an author sense and a consumer sense. women for sure have increased their consumption of fantasy and female authors are getting more attention. I would love to see where you got your stats because that would be fascinating

This has been a key, MAJOR trope in fantasy since the dawning of the genre. I think you just might be recognizing it now because it was unrelatable to you until you started seeing it from the context of a female protagonist.

I really don't think is dominated by women authors tho (not yet), unless is romantasy, but this is an interesting point nonetheless.

one of my favorite comic book characters is tigra. she hasn't always had the best writing over the years, but she is the poster child for this idea of having the Savage beast inside of her, and I think you could really do an interesting story exploring that in the ncu if Marvel would allow that to happen.

It saddens me to see the rise of figures like SJM when the field could be dominated by female authors like Robin Hobb.

When I see this trope, I usually think it's very male coded and kinda cringe. Craving violence and suppressed rage are very archetypally male traits. Usually the female equivalent is having to suppress being magical.

Yes, because men clearly never have to suppress their urge to do violent or aggressive things. This is a super long-standing fantasy trope; it has little to do with the gender of the author.
