To not look back and make it out the underworld is so practical. It is someone who follows rules. But there is no practicality in love. To love is to break rules.

I read a *fanfic* version once that had them talking about the rules of the exit, about Orpheus not being able to turn back, and about Eurydice realizing she cannot return to the living world, so they wait, and they wait. Sitting back to back halfway to the surface, and finally they decide to keep ascending, so perhaps as one parting gift Eurydice can see the light of day once more, and Orpheus can see the sun shining on Eurydice’s face. “There is no love greater than to give to another such a life as to be eternally remembered.”

For me, both looking back and not looking back is an act of love. I just think that the definition of love cannot be labeled as is. Personally, I wouldn't look back. Yes, I am not Orpheus but I will also go down the underworld just to save the loml but I will endure the pain of not looking back. I would rather endure the pain of not seeing you for hours, days, or months if it meant I can spend my eternity with you by the end. That is the way my love goes. For Orpheus, looking back is his way. For others it can be either of those two.

Hades challenges Orpheus’ love, it was impossible for him not to turn or it would mean he did not love Eurydice enough to do so. Losing game if they made it out, meaning if he did not turn, he did not love her.

in my opinion, to turn is to let go. Facing your lover knowing it will be the last time is truly a goodbye, an acceptance. You are aware of what you’re doing, and choosing to love one last time.

I like to think of a version where we never know if Eurydice was behind. Orpheus manage to get away from hell just by the thought of her being behind him, knowing that he’s loved even if she’s dead. That he can continue living with her always behind him.

I hate with all my heart anyone who faults Orpheus. Characters make choices for themselves and it is not random chance. An Orpheus capable of choosing to walk into hell is an Orpheus who had to turn around. There is no one without the other. If he was capable of looking forward he’d never have began in the first place. To love is to lose and that’s why it’s a tragedy
