I think more people just need to learn how to meditate. You’ll learn what consciousness is real fast when you get good at it. I’ll love to the people that want to make up charts and assign words and “isms” two things – but it’s really simple. Just learn to quiet the mind and go within. Everything that can be known is there.

Problem: explains correlation, dependence, & brain-hosting, but not why physical arrangements yield subjective awareness, recognition, meaning, value, or intentional directedness. Non-reductive physicalism Primitive: matter plus irreducible mental properties. Problem: admits reduction failure while granting matter explanatory priority. Quantum theories Primitive: quantum processes/fields. Problem: replaces one unexplained mystery with another. Information theories Primitive: information/structure/pattern. Problem: information requires a recognizer or interpreter. Otherwise it’s mere arrangement. Panpsychism Primitive: proto-consciousness everywhere. Problem: distributes consciousness into matter without explaining unity, meaning, intention, or coherent persons. Monism Primitive: one underlying substance/reality. Problem: one substance alone doesn’t explain intelligibility, awareness, distinction, or directedness. Dualism Primitive: mind & matter as distinct substances/properties. Problem: preserves consciousness but doubles primitives & leaves interaction unexplained. Idealism Primitive: mind/consciousness. Problem: risks treating “mind” as a container unless it explains directedness, distinction, & manifestation. Altered-state/anomalous theories Primitive: expanded consciousness/nonordinary experience. Problem: experiences are evidence to interpret, not a reduced foundation. Challenge/new-framework theories Primitive: unknown/new category. Problem: admits current primitives fail without offering a better one. I suggest: Intention-as-precursor Primitive: directedness/orientation prior to recognition, distinction, meaning, ordering, valuation, explanation, & manifestation. Strength: doesn’t claim to know consciousness’ substance. Every explanation already presupposes recognition, distinction, orientation, & interpretive order.

What’s it called when a thought pops into your head and literally seconds to minutes later that thought becomes I guess reality? For example, I think about calling my brother or wife and then I get a phone call from them. Or I think about an email I haven’t answered for work and my co-worker emails me regarding an update.

If humans have been walking the planet for 300,000 years and billions have existed and died, where are their consciousness? Then you have to ask, what about all other sentient creatures that have existed and died since life has existed, that number would be in the trillions. Where are all their consciousness? Wouldn’t any form of energy existing after death break the 1st law of thermodynamics?

Happy to see anomalous and altered states on there because I use to put my weight into my lucid dreams and out of body experiences. I haven’t been able to do those things and come back with any sort of verifiable information to conclude that I’m tapping into a shared reality where I can make objective truth claims so I just chuck it up to “happening in my head.” Very fun and interesting stuff but not necessarily “real” in an objective sense.

It’s pretty clear to me that consciousness is an emergent property. Whether from materialism or natural law or both, I don’t see how it’s a singular concept.

The common thread about NDE’s that the stopping of a heart beat does not mean actual death. The brain is still active which explains why some people “recall” a dream which is interpreted as having gone somewhere.

A video game can’t just be electrons moving around inside silicon and metal. It is too complex and wondrous. The richness of the worlds and the graphics and the gameplay! Can’t be explained away. There must be something deeper there. Maybe there’s a bit of video game inside everything!

I think we can explain behaviors and even categorize them. But I’m not convinced we will ever understand the original reason as to why consciousness exists.
