@bestwallethacks: When my wife was little, her grandfather gave her U.S. Treasury savings bonds as gifts. Sweet gesture... but here's the problem: after 30 years, they stop earning interest. So, at the risk of causing a little marital tension, I had to tell her they were just sitting there earning $0. If you're over a certain age and remember getting savings bonds as a kid, check to see if you've forgotten about them. You can search for unclaimed property through MissingMoney.com, and the U.S. Treasury says there are billions of dollars in matured savings bonds that have stopped earning interest. Why let that money sit when it could be back in your pocket? One more thing: don't pay a company to claim it for you. There are businesses that charge a fee for something you can do yourself. The process is free—you'll just need to complete a few forms, get them notarized, and mail them in. It takes a little patience, but you keep 100% of your money. Tag someone whose grandparents always gave savings bonds—they might have a surprise waiting for them.
