Built between 1852 and 1854 for Baron Mayer de Rothschild, it was designed by the architect Joseph Paxton and created to showcase the Rothschild family’s extraordinary wealth, art collection and influence. Inspired by the grand palaces of the Italian Renaissance, it remains one of the finest examples of Victorian architecture in Britain. Its dramatic appearance has also made it a favourite with filmmakers, featuring as Wayne Manor in Batman Begins and appearing in Eyes Wide Shut, among many other productions.
