A mom asked me this last week: "My daughter has had dark circles under her eyes since she was 3. She's 9 now. I always thought it was just how she looks. But... is it?"... No. Dark circles in children are rarely just how they look. They are a signal. And when you figure out what the body is signaling, those dark circles often fade. Here is the pattern I see over and over: Parent reaches out about dark circles that will not go away. They have tried everything: * Allergy medication * Air purifiers * Eliminating triggers * Parasite cleanses * More antihistamines Nothing worked. So they were told: "It's genetic. Some kids just have them." But here is what else is happening with these same kids: * Snoring at night * Waking up exhausted * Morning headaches * Can't focus at school * Chronically congested * Mouth breathing constantly Sound familiar? Here is what is actually going on: The dark circles are coming from: * Poor oxygenation during sleep * Chronic congestion and inflammation * Disrupted sleep quality * Blood pooling under the eyes from airway restriction All structural. All functional. All connected to one thing… The airway. A parasite cleanse might help with some things. But if the real issue is that your child cannot breathe properly at night? The dark circles will come right back. Because you did not address the structure. When I work with these families we often find: * Tongue tie that was never caught * Enlarged tonsils * A very narrow upper palate * Chronic mouth breathing * Disrupted sleep * Poor oxygenation overnight And nobody connected any of it to the dark circles.
