My theory: Xaden is the ex we don’t know the name of. Xaden’s family had always been infantry, hence why all she remembers is an infantry cadet. Xaden was most likely being raised to be infantry; he became a rider after being forced into the quadrant due to the punishments from the rebellion. Violet/Xaden were together but to save her daughter from any cruel fate they agreed to allow her memory to be erased instead due to her mothers status. Hence why she knew Violet was safest with Xaden, she knew he’d protect her at all costs.

Both of their parents being who they are makes me think it’s very plausible the met as children. I saw that theory somewhere and I really like it. I like the idea that xaden remembers a young violet maybe even playing with a young Dain and violet doesn’t remember

I read a theory somewhere that xaden and violet are reincarnations and Xaden has memories of his past life while violet doesn’t. Xaden is devoted to Malik, violet to Dunne. But Malik also wants violet and Xaden is basically Malik’s incarnation.

I too think that they’ve met before! They’re always emphasizing that Violet is so smart. Xaden even tells her she’s smarter than him but we only see a couple of real situations where she’s being clever and tactical. A part of me feels like she’s been involved with everything before she even entered into the college. She would have had at least 2-3 years of Imogen being able to wipe her mind before she crossed the parapet.

For some reason my gut is telling me they knew each other as kids. He’s the son of Royalty her mom’s a higher up officer. Meeting at parties or even her mom working with his dad doesn’t seem too far fetched to me. Idk something is wonky with it to me as well.

okay, hear me out: xaden and violet meet each other when they were kids/younger, but the revolution came and she forgot about him or she experienced some kind of trauma and her brain forgot about xaden. that’s kind of explains brennan and xaden knowing each other and trust each other in the revolution all the time. so that’s why he says he was hers long before she could imagine. and that’s why lilith ask for he’s help, not just because of the marked ones, but because they have a history too. and that why he keeps saying to violet to ask the “right” questions, i think something happened in the past and he can’t say it unless she asked. and that’s also explains the other ex she has but we don’t know nothing about it, because she’s not a reliable narrator!!!

Hmm I don’t know if the theory holds up about Xaden and Violet knowing each other before her Paraphet crossing — because if you read the bonus chapters with Xadens POV he acts surprised about his feelings for her. Almost as if he unexpectedly started crushing on her that day of the crossing and it intensifies until Threshing.

Xaden is a third year... Violet has been around the school for years... there is no way that Vi didn't know who Xaden was prior. Imogen likely wiped Vi's memory... a LOT... including before parapet

Wait wouldn't it be amazing if the book coming out in September is Xaden and Violets backstory? Xaden being in love with Violet and having Imogen wipe her mind to not involve her and get her interrogated. It would make sense too because the books are being transcribed by Jesinia so until Violet becomes aware of the fact that Imogen wiped her mind and wants to know what she has forgotten, she wouldn't have known there were memories before.
