Hi that comment was me, ur right it rlly depends I agree, but ur sat scores rlly aren’t a huge factor when applying to schools like Columbia when your competing with hundreds or thousands of students who also have 1500+ scores, it is a way on top of ur academics to ensure that ur high school scores represent ur level of knowledge since there are a lot of schools who have a lot of grade inflation and sometimes your total score is not a good representation of your capabilities since schools inflate grades so much nowadays. I agree that it also depends on the different sections of it in terms of reading and math, I also agree with the major that you’re going into if your major is more stem focused math would be more of your strong suit and you should have a higher math score if you’re going to more humanities English might be higher. I agree that there’s multiple factors however, if you’re aiming for schools like Columbia if you don’t have a minimum of a 1500+ it’s not worth sending your score in since if your school grades are high and you send in a low SAT score that could tell admissions officers that your grades are inflated, which can harm your application. If your score is a 1500+ it’s worth sending in, if you’re a low 1500s and that’s the best you can do. You should focus more on your essays in your extracurricular to fill the gap when admissions officers read ur application, and because most students who apply to Columbia all have 1500+ scores what differentiates you from other others is going to be your essays and your experiences and your extracurriculars and how you frame them in your essays. SAT score doesn’t necessarily make you stand out since most people who apply to top schools all have that score. Someone with a 1510 versus someone with a 1530 is not necessarily going to have an advantage in the process it really depends on your essays and extracurriculars at that point.

i have these conversations with the younger folks in my family all the time after working in admissions and advising in higher ed for nearly a decade … would love to make a transition to do this but i think companies are only recruiting from ivies or “public ivy” schools these days. 🫠

My daughter is at Columbia now and she didn’t include her scores but she supplementals were where we spent the most time as well as her 4 years of high school with a 4.0 and a 4.3 GPA weighted with all her extracurricular activities, internships, and summer enrichment

im planning of applying for a business major, but im not sure if i should take the sat this august/September. My school isn’t really focused on students going out of state for school and are mostly focused on UC’s so a lot of students are opting out of the sat since UC’s aren’t accepting sat scores. But i already did the psat and got a pretty bad score so i don’t know what to do.
