And as they grow older, they start to realize the teachers who are strictest and are rigorous but fair in their expectations are the ones who really care about them.

I subbed for 5th grade. I had a kid text his mom that I wouldnt let him go to the bathroom all because I said we had to wait for everyone to finish lining up (we were literally lining up to go to the bathroom). mom called the office and the office called me....

I’m so lucky to have had a wonderful mentor teacher during student teaching. Her two biggest pieces of advice were 1. Don’t trust students and 2. Treat your secretaries, custodians, aides & any other support staff like royalty. The school cannot and does not run without them and being in their favor makes your job significantly easier.

I treated them like children. My children, but children none the less.
And then I kept up with them. And now that they are 30. I consider 5 former students my friends.
Ive been teaching for 28 yrs.

So yes, they will turn on you and know they are not your friends. However, when it comes to class and teacher as a whole versus any of the following: administration, another teacher, another group of students, the school board or any entity from another school for the most part, they’ll stick with you.

One of the first thing a colleague told me was…” they are NOT your friends because, if push comes to shove, they’ll sell you down the river. If it’s you or them, you’re going down”. Stayed with me FOR 43 YEARS. I was loved (nice perk) because I was fair, could laugh but most importantly, had hard fast standards. They know. They ALWAYS know if they can maneuver around you. Loved them (& thankfully they loved me) but knew, KNEW keep them safe to keep me safe lol!

My wife is a teacher. She saw a student she had a couple years ago at the grocery store. He ran up and hugged her and was so excited to see her. Afterwards she said, "I thought he hated me."

Hearing your second grade stories made me breathe a sigh of relief😭 I was 1000% the limpy gazelle at my student teaching placement and made similarly silly mistakes (like the calendar and protractor) and was convinced i just didn’t have the particular type of common sense needed to be a teacher. I love your videos and hearing that someone as incredible of a teacher as you can come from such chaotic beginnings gives me hope! keep doing you, and thank you!
