@worldwarrii: On the night of May 8–9, 1945, Germany officially signed its final unconditional surrender at the Soviet High Command headquarters in Berlin-Karlshorst, bringing the war in Europe to an end. Although Germany had already signed a surrender document in Reims on May 7, the Soviet Union requested a second and more formal ceremony in Berlin, highlighting the decisive role of the Red Army in the final stages of the war. The German delegation was led by Field Marshal Wilhelm Keitel, accompanied by representatives of the German Navy and Air Force. On the Allied side, Marshal Georgy Zhukov signed for the Soviet Union, while Air Chief Marshal Arthur Tedder represented the Western Allies. American and French representatives also attended the ceremony. Because the signing took place just before midnight in Central European Time, it was already May 9 in Moscow, which is why Victory Day is celebrated on May 8 in some countries and May 9 in others. The surrender ended nearly six years of war in Europe, leaving millions displaced and marking the beginning of Europe’s reconstruction. #ww2 #worldwar2 #History #HistoryTime #victory
