This is me! I’ve been in my school for 15 years now, I started as a 21 year old fresh NQT, no kids and spent my whole life working. I’m now 36 with 3 kids and working 4 days as the HOD in the department I started in. My school is the reason I have stayed in teaching- my school is truly amazing. There will always be the polices/ the new initiatives/ the buzz words etc- but my school/SLT and I guess now me- think carefully about them importance of a work life balance.

It can work but is incredibly tough. Mum of a 5 and 2 year old and work 4 days a week as a secondary school teacher. Since having children my work/life balance has completely changed. I don't do any work on my day off and then on the weekends, I maybe do 1 hour of work on a Sunday evening to just get myself prepped for the week. Also, I've finally accepted that things don't need to be perfect every single day and the help of AI has been great for planning and workload! It's tough going when you can't always make your own child's sports days / assemblies. That's my biggest gripe with being a teacher mum!

I had my first son whilst at uni so I’ve never taught without having kids and I really believed it helped me. I didn’t get into any negative habits first and my kids have always come first! Don’t get me wrong it’s still hard but I didn’t have to adjust as I started out that way x

I moved to a SEND school and my work life balance improved drastically. I don’t take work home with me ever and SLT never ask this of you. I finish at half 4 Mon-Thur and half 3 Friday. I have 2 children and I’m able to attend all of their school events (pre book them off). Honestly life’s never been so good I get to do both things I love. 🤍

Been a teacher for 10 years now. Just gone back to work after MAT leave and I’m working 3 days a week sharing a class with another momma teacher!

I think it can work really well if your children are a little older, so around yr6 or older
