@fred_duncan: You don’t NEED to toe drag, nor do many of the best utilize it. Most young athletes try to toe drag because they’ve seen it in some elite sprinters and assume it’s the cause of speed. That’s the first mistake. Actively dragging the toe doesn’t help you accelerate. Creating friction against the ground outside of true stance doesn’t move you forward faster. The second explanation people give is that a lower heel helps you get the foot back on the ground sooner so you can push. That idea only holds if it emerges naturally from good projection, appropriate shin angles, and efficient swing mechanics. When it’s forced, it usually disrupts timing instead of helping it. What’s important to understand is that low heel recovery and toe drag aren’t the same thing. You can have efficient low heel recovery without dragging the toe at all. Toe drag just tends to steal the attention because it’s visually obvious. What you’re seeing in elite sprinters is almost always an outcome, not a cue. Those outcomes are the result of a very specific combination of explosive strength, coordination, anthropometrics, and skill. And unless you can match the direction, duration, and magnitude of force application, blindly copying elite solutions is a mistake. Finally, what you see as an observer of movement is not what the athlete is thinking about, nor how they were coached. You’re seeing the end result of a system built over years, not the instructions that created it. Blindly copying appearances without understanding the “why” is how young athletes end up forcing shapes they haven’t earned. Speed isn’t just a look. It’s a solution to constraints. If you want the full framework for how speed is actually developed, Speed Kills breaks down sprint mechanics, strength, plyometrics, and programming in context. This is my most complete product ever: 80+ pages and a full 8-week program. #sprints #speedtraining #sprinttraining #speedworkout #sprinter

The whole idea is to keep the foot as close as possible to the ground, reducing air time and puttinh force to the ground. Toe drag isn’t neccesary.

People don’t understand the toe drag is not intentional , it’s the result of limbs switching . Great video
