This is Jessica and her mam, Valerie, who joined us at The St. Peter’s Social Bar in Byker on 1-7-2026. Valerie’s dad — Jessica’s grandad — came through, but the bond between him and Jessica was far more than simply grandad and granddaughter. He had practically brought Jessica up as his own daughter. As they laughingly explained, he had basically “stolen her” from Valerie — and Valerie was perfectly happy with that. The connection was incredibly strong, and he began speaking about specific things connected to Jessica and the family. He also acknowledged Valerie’s other daughter who was sitting with them that night — the one who, when she came along, completely stole his heart too. Then I described him as a true gentleman. A man who absolutely hated swearing. That brought back one memory they will never forget. Valerie confirmed that there was one occasion when he became so angry that he actually said the C-word. For a man like him, that was completely out of character. He was so disgusted and embarrassed with himself that he apologised for it all day. That one tiny detail said so much about the man he was. But what came through most strongly was how much he wanted them to understand something. They remember everything he did for them. They feel the loss of the man who gave them so much, helped them so much and created so many happy memories for them. But he wanted them to know it was never one-sided. Yes, he gave them so much — but they gave him happiness too. They gave his life love, purpose, laughter and memories. He wanted them to stop feeling as though they only received from him, because the happiness they brought into his life meant just as much. Then the reading began building towards something incredibly specific. He started talking about a particular holiday photograph. He spoke about taking them away year after year. And then came the name… BENALMADENA. Not just a random holiday destination. He actually had an apartment in Benalmadena. That was where they went every year. That was where Jessica learned to swim. And in that moment, the memories came flooding back. This was the final reading of the night, and what happened afterwards made this video even more special for me. I packed my equipment away and went outside to load the car for my journey home — and Jessica, Valerie and the family were still standing outside. They were still talking about the reading. Still going through the details. Still trying to take in just how much had been said. So I turned my phone on and asked them to tell me, in their own words, what had just happened.
