Umar Bago, the Governor of Niger State, has removed all Fulani district heads (traditional rulers) in the state and replaced them with chiefs. He said the decision was prompted by the rising cases of kidnapping. According to him, when kidnapped victims are released after ransom is paid, they often identify Fulani as those responsible for the abductions. He also stated that whenever there is a dispute between the indigenous people of Niger State and some Fulani communities, some of those involved allegedly invite their relatives from neighboring countries to join the conflict. In addition, there have been growing concerns over land grabbing involving some Fulani groups in Niger State.
