Ok, first off I want to say that if what you’re doing is working…I’m genuinely happy for you. You should absolutely keep doing that, because teaching is hard enough. Incentives DID work for me for awhile, until they didn’t. I found that my students got bored, wanted more, and if the prize wasn’t something they were interested in, there went their motivation to behave. I found that incentives for basic good behavior bred an attitude of entitlement in my classroom. I was OVER IT, but I wasn’t sure what to do. I tried using some consequences, but they weren’t set in stone. If a student misbehaved I tried common management techniques like ignoring it, praising a nearby student, and then just hoping the behavior didn’t escalate. If it did escalate, then I had to think of a consequence. I would try a pep talk, take recess, or try and think of something that I could have them do that logically tied into what rule they broke. It was exhausting. I felt like I was constantly either awarding points or thinking of ways to handle misbehavior. #classroommanagement #teachertips #classroommanagementtips #classroommanagementstrategies #classroommanagementideas #elementaryschool #elementaryteacher #middleschool
