Anyone acting surprised by hetero couples’ hesitation to talk about sexual wants/needs with each other is ignoring the 800-lb. gorillas in the rooms. Hetero relationships are still an exchange of resources: desire for/access to Land (her) versus gaining certain forms of security (him). Until those couples get real about that, they can’t prioritize exploration and desire without creating political insecurity in their relationships that aren’t worth the costs to them. Full stop. It’s easy to point out the symptom of the bigger issue. Hetero normative society has elevated the two-parent, two-person, two-earner household to such an ideal much of the structure and economics of society make couples think twice about destabilizing their marriage over what seem smaller issues (not being directly vulnerable about and getting the kind of sex you want with your partner as that evolves over time) when other solutions with sometimes lower risks (hinting, using digital or other outlets) also exist and have proliferated. Hetero couples, at least, are effectively in a business called “The Family” together and that takes precedence.
