@tblizzy: The story I shared is an example of why the argument, “This is just a typical American making everything about race,” doesn’t hold up. I was with a group of Black women from all around the world, and despite our different backgrounds, our overall experiences were painfully similar. White people rarely have to think about the space they take up because they’re living in a world and within systems that were designed for them. It’s summertime, we all outside, I felt it was worth reminding people to be more mindful of the space they occupy. If you consider yourself an ally and genuinely care about creating more inclusive spaces, I hope you’ll move through the world with a different level of awareness and discernment 🤷🏽‍♀️ #bipocspaces #blackevents #race #colonialism #barcelona

Thank you for making this video people don’t get the fact that straight people make gay space unsafe, just because you feel safe around that person does not mean anyone else will so do not invite a person who should not be part of that space into that space. Bipoc, gay whatever. That space is designed for people who are marginalized and need safety and community. I would never go to an invite like this and my friends would never ask because we respect each other.

AS a white, queer, woman, thanks so much for talking about this and making this video!! I never really thought about it that way, and even though I dont think I would have gone to an event like that anyway, this was really interesting to hear about and I love educating myself further :)))

that comparison you made to queer people really helped, thanks for saying that. I'm a highschooler so I haven't really had any experience like this but I'll take it as advice for the future

yeah that was my take away from the movie Sinners. folks just need their own spaces sometimes and that should be respected! people like me (CIS, het men) don't need to be everywhere all the time

✋genuine question/hopefully not missing the point-What if I am making an effort to give my business to stores owned by women, BIPOC, LGBTQ+ people? Or to learn more about these communities that I'm not a part of? I don't necessarily want to take up space or even feel included. Does that make sense? Any input is appreciated.

It’s important for people not to roll their eyes and listen to conversations like this to gain more understanding of other communities, no matter how uncomfortable it is. Thank you for sharing this

Appreciate your message and thanks for sharing! I definitely will keep this in mind for future reference. To answer your question in my own perspective: I for sure was not aware about this. Eventhough I do not often go to BIPOC events, I did have the assumption that this is also for allies to show their support and learn. I know some people their partner/kids is/are from the BIPOC community and therefore are joining. To be honest I just don't know how to divide to know where I would be welcome as an ally and where it is really exclusively focussed on BIPOC. And it is something I will be more cautious about going forward. So again, thanks for sharing!

I’m always listening girl. Good to know. Sometimes I think while people want to help / support (obviously not the ones who went to that event cos you said they were being racist) and may think showing up shows support. But it’s good to know - time and place! Your feelings are valid ❤️
