@chris_thoughts: I keep hearing that Sony is no different than Nintendo with digital games… But key cards are nothing like the all digital future we are about to embark upon with Sony for so many reasons. #videogames #sony #playstation #nintendoswitch2
People rather spread misinformation then the facts now a days. It’s unfortunate.

Nintendos game key cards are chosen to be game key cards by the devs, not forced by Nintendo. Thats a pretty significant difference. Now… do I think Nintendo could up the storage capacity to 128gb for the game cards? Absolutely. But seeing how Sony is handling this, I will take the game key cards over this nonsense. It doesn’t mean that I like game key cards, because I don’t, but it’s by far a better option than all digital. At least it’s only some games that are game key cards. And they are easy to tell which games are like this. Switch 1 also had them, it was just harder to tell without reading the back of the case.

ironically nintendo key cards only get hated on because nintendo explicitly state it doesn't have the game on it the others have been making them years with nowhere near as much clarity

Another thing too that has officially been proven! Game Key Cards don’t initiate download from the EShop. The download is directly from the server. People have gotten their hands on some of the game key cards before the Eshop went live on Switch 2 and they still immediately started downloading. This indicates that even if the Eshop is no longer available in the future, that as long as the servers are still active like with Wii, Wii U and 3DS, you can still download and play the game… as long as it’s playable offline that is

The lack of competition with Sony going all digital is the most concerning thing about going all digital because it’s not like PC game stores like Steam or Epic etc no competition means games will not go on sale as often and prices will stay high longer aside from killing the secondhand market and the collector space but either way if they delist something whether you have a code or a keycard the game becomes unplayable unless it is already installed in the device.

Nintendo key cards can at least be resold. I don’t like key cards, but can accept them when it’s due to technical or memory limitations. I prefer a keycard over 100% digital though.

Compared to the rest of the gaming industry Nintendo have always been pretty much saints
Like the worst they've done is be kiiinda on the expensive side (not really though because they're usually the cheaper option, especially nowadays compared to the ps5 pro and steamdeck) and be overly protective of their IPs when it comes to fangames (which to play devils advocate they do technically have the right to do sadly), and the rest of it is either overblown or straight up misinformation

I see it as a baby step into digital only for Nintendo as well. Nintendo will follow in the future. This was just getting people used to the idea slowly.

key cards are ten times better than codes but people don't want to admit it because they would say something good about Nintendo and that's not good for views

Key cards are equally bad. What happens if the service gets shut down years later? Nintendo and third-party developers are potentially forcing people to switch to digit through key cards

key cards are fine u still get a physical game and can still resell later because other people will be able to down load the rest of the game it’s a good middle ground compared to an all digital platform

People are oblivious that game key cards exist on PlayStation too. 007 first light for example needs to internet to download the full game. Keycards are an easy cop out to lazy developers, but at least they keep the second hand market alive. What Sony are doing is setting the precedent of a future where consumers have to bend to their will constructing a monopoly over the PlayStation platform with no alternative. The future is extremely bleak on PlayStation which infuriates me as a long time fan of Sony. This is my final straw with them for me and if I could afford one I’d already have migrated to pc on the back of their decision.

And keycards are Nintendo’s attempt at keeping physical alive, they literally said this is a compromise with developers who didn’t want to raise prices due to cartridges being expensive
