this is something used in arguments a lot where you subtly change the argument to an easier one to rebut. the original argument was: this won't work his answer was: it did work, it has the ingredients to work, and showed the UV light not penetrating it your answer was: this isn't reliable and people shouldn't use it you see the change? it's changing the conversation from did it work in the specific case to could it hypothetically work for everyone all of the time to make it easier to talk about. obviously it worked in this case. obviously it can work. so because you can't rebut those two things other than to say "it's social media they're lying" you change it to talking about everyone and doing this all of the time and not just in extreme cases.

The guy you’re responding to literally said wearing a heavy concentration of zinc oxide isn’t an ideal everyday sunscreen. It was effective in extreme conditions. The evidence is there. What else should he have done? It’s not like he was able to reapply sunscreen while swimming.

I feel like everyone is missing the point that it was never a recommendation as everyday sunscreen replacement but rather a special solution for an extreme sport situation where no actual sunscreen was capable of doing the job

This argument is so funny. Dispersion is a problem in so many formulations. And diaper rash cream doesn’t have an FDA approved SPF rating (because nobody’s paying a lab for that when it’s not the product’s purpose). But the bottom line is, if you slather enough 40% diaper rash cream on, you’re going to get very good occlusion. ~from a formulations chemist
