When I saw Ari Kytsya’s original video, and that it had been taken down, I immediately thought of all of the research in social science that backs each of her jokes. So what better way to unpack them than a four part series? In part one, I break down a concept from psychology called ambivalent sexism. Developed by Peter Glick and Susan Fiske, ambivalent sexism argues that sexism is more than hostility toward women. It also surfaces in ideas that sound positive on the about how women are special, women should be protected, women are naturally nurturing. Most importantly, these types of sexism work together so women are often rewarded when they conform to social expectations and punished when they don’t.
