one of the best qualities of a good NCO is being able to flip that switch and be a regular person when they can be. its all good being hard on your guys when needed, but knowing when to be chill is a learned skill that is rare.

This happened to me. I went back to Great Lakes for C school after being on a ship. I had to report to the barracks first, and they treated me like a booter. When he realized I was a fleet returnee, he dropped the act. "Aw shit, sorry man. Sit down and chill."

My last platoon got me as an 18 year SSgt. I didn’t care about any of the battalion bs all I cared about was the Marines got all of their PME done, trucks stayed on the road, all of them got up to at least green belt and we PTed like mad men. Then they went on the MEU and I retired.

This is exactly how my husband and I are. At work, we're Cpls, but when we have guests over to our home, it's first name basis only, regardless of rank. Nothing is more valuable than your peace and separating work from real life is crucial

Be this guy! Sucks getting looked at as a “shit bag” for being the chill NCO. But truly it’s worth it for everyone. Don’t be a prick because then your boots just fuckin hate you and they won’t listen when your teaching.
