@pickeringfitness: In 2024 I posted a video taking my shirt off telling people to say the word herpes out loud in a mirror. It hit 16.8 million views. The comments were full of people confused about why I was shirtless. If I had any shame left I probably would have been embarrassed. Here's what it taught me. 1. Nothing bad actually happened. The fear of people finding out was never proportional to reality. 2. 16.8 million people saw it and moved on five minutes later. Nobody is sitting around thinking about your diagnosis. Nobody cares as much as you think they do. 3. Bad publicity is just free reach. Every person who shared it to mock it sent it to someone who needed it. 4. Anyone attacking a confident guy with herpes is telling you everything about their own internal state. If your life was going well you wouldn't be in those comments. 5. Once you actually understand herpes the ignorance becomes funny. Not threatening. Just comical. You stop taking it personally and start finding it entertaining. 6. The diagnosis only holds power while it's a secret. The moment it's out it can't be used against you. I didn't become more vulnerable when 16.8 million people found out. I became untouchable. 7. I'm not special. There's no reason I should be the one doing this. I just decided to. That's the only difference between me and anyone else still hiding. 8. Confidence compounds. The more people who know, the less it matters, the more natural every conversation becomes, the better every outcome gets. 9. Dating is a numbers game. Enough visibility finds you the people who don't care, and those are the only ones you needed anyway. If you haven't told your best friend yet, start there.
