@motherhoodventures: Kids overconsumption is out of hand. Back to school shopping is already starting so I want to say you don’t need to get your kid a new backback…or lunch box… or shoes… or even clothes if what they have works and fits. Our consumption choices affect the future they will inherit and we all need to be more diligent in practicing conscious consumption. Opt for higher quality when you can and look for brands with warranties! @JanSport #consciousconsumer #backtoschoolshopping #overconsumption
I bought my son the Pottery Barn backpack for Kindergarten. I'm using it again for 1st grade. It is good quality. Im going to keep on using it until he says something or I feel I need to change it.

I thought the whole point of a pottery barn backpack was that it would last several years 😅

I got a new backpack every year, and I will be doing the same for my kids. They’re only like $30 once a year, it’s not expensive. That’s more than your weekly coffee. We use the old ones for travel and donate them when they outgrow them.

Do what YOU want with YOUR money and let other parents do what they want with THEIR money. The issue you’re describing isn’t overconsumption, its parents not teaching their children to be KIND. I got a new backpack every year, so does my child. Neither of us have bullied other kids for not having new backpacks.

I buy a new one every year. And at the end of every year we put in all there sentimental stuff from the year in it and into a bigger tote in the shed. when they are older its going to be cool to go through and it look at it all.

I took my jansport backpack as my carry-on on an overnight trip to Boston two weeks ago. I got that backpack my freshman year of high school. I’m 36.

Tip - get a good quality bag. Charms and keychains work as decoration and are easily changed as they grow and change interests. Use the bag until it needs to be replaced (warranty or purchase) and let them have fun with changing their charms. You can make them with them too with the bead pet patterns! You CAN personalize with temporary charms…. But PLEASE remember - for the love of anything you believe in - no visible names! Please please please

I got a new one every year until high school. A single yearly purchase is not massive overconsumption

I don’t see the problem. My favorite memory was shopping for a new backpack for the new school year, core memory right there. If it’s in people’s means there’s really not a problem. You can’t talk about overconsumption with people who have the means for this. It doesn’t affect them.

For every new school “promotion” they get a backpack. Ex one for elementary, one for middle and one for HS.

My rule was always when you start at a new school. So my kids got one for preschool and kindergarten, 1-5, 6-8, 9-12 so 4 back packs total.

My daughter had LL Bean grades 2-5 and got a new LL Bean for middle school with more space. She got a solid color and we sewed patches on to decorate it. She is going to use that one at least all of middle school.

My 15 year old has only ever had 3 or 4 backpacks. Her 11 year old sister has had 4 but the first one was a hand me down from her older sister and the most recent one she bought for herself. I do not buy into needing new backpacks and lunch boxes every year.

We’re minimalist and like lower consumption. Try to pick less bold themes and make it fun through other accents like the waterbottle or lunch bag or keychains!

We need to normalize minding our own business. My kids got a new one every single year. It was something that they looked forward to. That was how WE did things and we didn't judge the people who didn't do it. It is just not your business what people do with their money for their kids.

Getting a new backpack is part of the “back to school” ritual. Something the kids can get excited about and look forward to. Kids have gotten new backpacks forever.

It’s not over consumption when you donate the backpacks after your children use them. But your video isn’t about over consumption is it, it’s about money spent. What is more important then people buying their kids new backpacks every year is people like you counting other people’s money. If I want to buy my kids a new northface back pack every single year I can absolutely do that! Quite honestly it’s none of your business! I’ve bought my kids new backpacks almost every year, and I wash them and hand them down to someone less fortunate who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford these bags. So may I kindly suggest that you do what you want in your home and not judge others who choose a different path for theirs.

I would love to reuse back packs so if you could make my kids keep theirs clean so I could. I throw them in the wash but they never come clean. By June the outside is nasty. I think its from the school bus. The bags go in the floor and its winter here most of the year.
