(x-y)(x+y) = x²+xy-xy-y²=x²-y²
so if we want to find the a² from a²+b²=c², it is indeed a²=(c+b)(c-b)

youtube just skips some steps. the "MIT" solution only works if the known leg and hypotenuse differ by 1

School is showing you ALL the steps because the point is for you to UNDERSTAND how it works. We don't care about the answer.
You Tube does not care about showing HOW it works, it wants you to watch it and is selling getting the answer faster.
MIT assumes you already understand how it works AND that you have worked out the fastest way to do it because all they want IS the answer the quickly.

Yes as a mathematician there many ways of doing problems and I encourage students to try different approaches. But they need to know WHY it works in the first place

My way 41^2-40^2=(41+40)(41-40)=81=x^2 x=sqrt81=9 😁

if it was done the MIT way, points would be deducted in all my mathematic schools.
